The tell tale signs of Dundee’s rich history are still visible from the Jute industry boom of the Victorian era. For those who are not familiar with Jute it is a strong plant fibre that is used in making ropes, sacks and cloth. Linen production gradually took over Dundee and the city was commonly known as the “juteopolis”. Jute production ceased due to high competition from overseas and Dundee suffered badly as a result. The Verdant Works is a restored 19th century jute mill and a living history museum Dundee’s long association with the Jute trade and is most definitely worth a visit. Jam, jelly or marmalade, whatever you want to call it we all love it. The story goes that it was Janet Keillor who discovered marmalade in the 1700’s when she was trying to find a use for bitter Seville oranges. Her recipe was developed by her son James Keilour who opened the now world famous Keillor factory for jams and marmalades. The third ‘J’ to Dundee’s history is ‘Journalism’. The publishing company D.C Thomspon is home of “The Beano”, “The Dandy” and “Dennis the Menace”. It was one of the largest employers in the city, second only to the public and leisure sector. It survived the recession despite having to make cuts to the workforce.
